Extended Car Warranties

In our experience extended service warranties are a very good thing and an investment in your peace of mind.

EDGE Motorworks does not sell extended car warranties. This page is meant to help you understand our experience working with them and how you can best use an extended warranty.

Aftermarket car warranties have been invaluable for many of our customers. The coverage they provide for high end cars can be extensive, and we all know our BMWs, Porsche, Mercedes, Audis and other luxury cars need repairs.

What does an extended car warranty cover?

Most warranties offer various levels of coverage, ranging from basic powertrain protection to comprehensive bumper-to-bumper coverage. We always suggest bumper to bumper warranties, especially with modern cars using technology extensively.

  • Powertrain warranties typically only cover the engine, transmission, and drivetrain. Although often less expensive, these warranties offer limited protection.
  • Bumper-to-bumper warranties provide extensive coverage, including electrical systems, air conditioning, and technology (navigation and entertainment systems).

Understand the exclusions such as wear-and-tear items like brakes, tires, or routine maintenance. Additionally, some warranties may have specific requirements, such as following the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule, to remain valid.

Getting All of the Repairs Your Car Needs

We have built relationships with the following companies and have had great experiences with all of them. Extended warranty companies are like any insurance company and finding a reliable one is vital in ensuring your car is well taken care of.

  • Assurant – usually purchased through a dealer
  • The Warranty Group (now Assurant)
  • CNA National
  • Fidelity
  • Kornerstone

The adjusters from these companies work closely with us to make sure their customer cars have all necessary repairs done. We are very detailed and the fine-tooth comb we use to inspect cars often illuminates bigger issues than originally expected. These companies don’t hesitate to approve the necessary repairs.

Are extended car warranties worth the price?

In our experience, YES! We 100% recommend aftermarket service warranties for the cars we typically work on. This is more true with parts costs and service rates increasing.

Evaluating your tolerance and financial situation will help you determine if the benefits of an extended car warranty outweigh the costs. If we owned a 2019 Toyota Camry, we would be less inclined to purchase an aftermarket warranty for it. When it comes to a 2018 BMW X5, we wouldn’t hesitate to purchase a warranty.

How much does an extended car warranty cost?

The cost of an extended car warranty varies significantly based on these factors:

  • Vehicle’s make, model, age, and mileage
  • The level of coverage
  • The warranty provider

Generally, warranties for newer vehicles or those with lower mileage tend to be more affordable. In comparison, warranties for older or high-mileage vehicles can be more expensive due to the increased risk of breakdowns.

Powertrain warranties, which offer basic coverage, are typically less expensive than bumper-to-bumper warranties, which provide more comprehensive protection.

The warranty provider also plays a role. Dealerships may offer warranties at a higher price than third-party providers. Dealer warranties can offer additional benefits, such as using genuine manufacturer parts – our preferred companies allow us to use manufacturer or equivalent components.

Where can I buy an extended car warranty?

Our Suggested Extended Warranty Companies

Extended car warranties can be purchased from the dealer of aftermarket providers. Dealerships often offer extended warranties at the time of purchase, which can be bundled into the vehicle financing. These warranties may be more expensive than those offered by third-party providers but can be more convenient if purchasing a new car.

Independent warranty companies offer a wider range of options and competitive pricing. It’s crucial to research and compare different providers to ensure they are reputable and financially stable. As we have done previously, we recommend these providers because of their proven integrity, pricing, and reliability:

Look for providers with positive customer reviews and a solid track record of paying claims. Additionally, carefully review the contract terms and conditions to understand the coverage, exclusions, and claims process. Shopping around and comparing quotes from multiple sources will help you find the best extended car warranty that meets your needs and budget.

Pre and Post-purchase Inspections

We feel a pre-purchase inspection is mandatory when buying a used vehicle, especially an older one. We give you a very detailed and objective assessment of the car’s condition. This  empowers you in negotiation and gives you peace of mind ensuring a well-informed buying decision.

Under-car Inspections

Like the pre and post-purchase inspections, we deliver a highly detailed report on your car’s condition. You will know exactly what needs to be addressed immediately and what can be deferred. This allows you to schedule maintenance and repairs based on the need, your time, and budget.
